Bodega Tapas Bar, Surry Hills

2009 April 5

matadorFinally! After living in Surry Hills for years, and just metres from Bodega I finally got there courtesy of a blogger meet up with the lovely Ellie from Kitchen Wench who was in Sydney for work. Helen, Suze and I met at Central and headed over to Bodega nice and early to ensure a table as they don’t take bookings.

Lucky for us we got there early as there were the beginnings of a queue not five minutes after we turned up at 5:45pm..

On being seated we looked over the incredibly extensive winelist, Ellie settling on a white, and myself on a rose and we got to ordering.

We went for a couple of classics, Jamon Serrano, the housemade chorizo with sofrito, the beef empanadas and when they were served at the table next to us, we were seduced by the smell of the mushrooms with garlic…

In addition, we went for one of their signature dishes: “The Fish fingers”…

Our dishes weren’t served in any particular order, and at one point we were worried that they had forgotten our chorizo, when our attentive waiter appeared with it just as we asked him!

The kitchen is open with Elvis Abrahanowicz at the helm and working hard…

The empanadas were fresh and hot, with lovely chewy and flaky pastry, while the mushrooms were gorgeously juicy and meaty and the garlic was served whole in it’s paper so you could squeeze out the sweet clove and smear it over the bread…

The jamon was delicious and hoovered up pronto, while the “Fish fingers” reminded me more of a bruschetta, with the combination of oiled bread, sashimi kingfish, cuttlefish ceviche and mojama, a cured tuna. The combo was delicious, all tangy, fresh and sweet all at the same time.

The handmade chorizo was very different to what I’ve had previously. Less solid, more loosley packed, and succulent and juicy, with a lovely kick in the back end…Just lovely.

After having checked out the dessert menu online, I think we frightened poor Ellie with our ravenous desire NOT to share desserts! Especially as we were all completely enamoured with the concept of the banana split: cream flan, ginger biscuit, dulce de leche icecream, banana marshmallow…We were, however, convinced by our waiter to also order something else, so I caved and went for the chocolate terrine, with fresh figs, cava jelly and yoghurt icecream…

We were all somewhat disappointed in the cream flan, and I didn’t get a hint of ginger biscuit, though the others may have. The dulce de leche icecream, banana cream and marshmallow were delectable and tasted just like actual banana…mmmyum!

But, I have to say, the lovely waiter was right. I love figs, and I love chocolate. So this blend hit all the right notes for me. I would come back for this dessert alone!

I really enjoyed Bodega and was impressed with the value and the excellent service. It was a bit squishy, and a little loud, and if you’re planning on taking photos, is quite dark. But a fun, and tasty little corner of Surry Hills.

Oh, I can STILL remember how fabulous the empanada pastry was! I honestly almost jumped into the kitchen to demand the recipe after I took my first bite! Wonderful meeting you, Helen and Suze, we have to do this again if I’m ever in your part of the woods again! 🙂
