Bootleg Bar + Italian Food, Potts Point
A couple of years back I went to New York, and one of things that I really loved was that so many restaurants had a bar (not always serving alcohol) where you could sit and eat on your own without feeling self conscious or taking up a larger table. The reason for this is mostly the totally inadequate kitchen facilities of tiny New York apartments which has necessitated the culture of eating out. This was an absolute godsend for me eating my way around New York on my own.
Bootleg Bar + Italian Food has borrowed heavily from this New York style of eating. You have the option of sitting at the bar with a drink and bar snacks/main meal or heading back into the sexily lit restaurant with it’s leather banquette, and cool art collection of Eighties hiphop/punk photography on the walls by Janette Beckman.
On this particular evening, I head in with two of my crazy girlfriends, one of which who lives in Victoria Street and has fallen head over heels in love with this little spot. The menu is simple and very straightforward with a couple of specials written up on the blackboard.
Tonight we start with the crostini with raw tuna, preserved lemon, mint and chilli. Unfortunately none of these zingy flavours are present, though the tuna is super fresh and tasty. I would love to have this again, properly.
To accompany our meal I pick a Bass Strait Pinot Noir. I am not a wine aficionado at all, but I am slowly but surely learning my way through the maze that is wine, and trying to find ones I like. I like this one.
My two dining companions both choose a special of fusilli with wild mushrooms, sage, cream and truffle oil. The rich and heady aromas hit you as soon as the plates are brought near…so rich and very lush…
We decide to add some greens to our meal and order a side of green beans, with fresh herbs, balsamic and toasted breadcrumbs..
I went for another of the specials, a gnocchi with tomato and roast capsicum..I’m not a huge fan of gnocchi, but I loved the tasty sweet and tart combo of the tomato & capsicum sugo
This sexy little stunner is the perfect place for an intimate tete-a-tete or a raucous night out with the girls with great food, great atmosphere and music. And for this corner of Potts Point, it’s not pretentious at all.
