Brown Sugar, Bondi
Bondi: synonymous with Sydney, salt, sand, surf, summer. Just what I needed after a few horrific weeks at work. A day to relax and rejuvenate. What better way than to kick back with my friend @kristinmoore2 at legendary cafe Brown Sugar. I’d heard about Brown Sugar in various lists of best Bondi cafes, but had never managed to get there. Today, a weekday, a day off work, otherwise known as a “doona day” or “mental health day” was the day to get there.
It was a glorious day, and after a stroll down Curlewis Street checking out the various shops, I was there.
A light and leisurely lunch was in order. First thing to pique my interest was the juice/frappes: a refreshing combo of ginger, mint and a few other things which I can’t remember. It was so good my friend ordered one too
I was starving by this time, and decided after checking out the specials to go for the steak sandwich, a dish pretty much guaranteed to satisfy me under pretty much any circumstances.
The first thing that impressed me was the fantastic salad served with my sandwich: it was tasty, unusual (spot the lentils) and generous. Unfortunately the steak was on the chewy gristly side, but otherwise a deliciously good steak sanger.
My friend opts for the chicken salad with seeds, baby spinach and almonds…another unusual and tasty combination, and another generous serve.
People stream in for lunch, coffee and to hang out. It’s certainly a neighbourhood favourite. Time for coffee and I’m very disappointed with their brew. Burnt and bitter, and I had to ask after it, after it didn’t turn up for some time. They made up for this by taking it off the bill, but I couldn’t finish it anyway.
I really enjoyed Brown Sugar, and found it unpretentious and not filled with British backpackers or tourists, which is generally the trend on the main drag. Definitely a fabulous spot to while away summer afternoons at the beach.
