Moose General Store + Cafe, Redfern

Update: Unfortunately Moose General Store + Cafe has had to close it’s doors due to issues with the Local Council. Head over to their site to find out the latest.

We hope that they are able to open doors at a new venue soon.

You can continue to buy Moose Jam, Granola’s and Tea online and at Kings X Markets on Saturdays

Sunday morning breakfast in the hood. I have a particular soft spot for long rambling breakfasts but they are few and far between.  Since we got a coffee machine a couple of years back we  seemed to have stopped venturing out.  But I still venture out occasionally. I was lured out this windy Father’s Day by the lure of expertly made coffee and their renowned chocolate granola.

Yep, CHOCOLATE GRANOLA. But Before the chocolate granola there had to be coffee, and oh, the coffee…This was probably the BEST long black I’ve ever had. Full of natural sweetness and no bitterness at all, with no sugar required!

But first, the menus!

How cute is this as a way of presenting the menu? So very clever and brings back many happy memories of voraciously devouring the Blyton books as a child.

We decided on a bit of a breakfast degustation, as we wanted to try a bit of everything..First up, the baked eggs in sugo

The sugo is deliciously tomatoey and yum, the Infinity sourdough perfectly toasted. I do prefer my yolks runnier, but it’s the perfect way to kick off our little breaky feast..

Moose General Store also make their own range of jams, we order some plain toast to have a try:

Our toast comes with apricot + clove and blackberry + shiraz…The jams are for sale and as noted below, are divided by their soberness of drunkeness…

Next up, the chocolate granola served with yoghurt and the blackberry + shiraz jam

This granola is AWESOME! It is granola, but not as we know it. I may have to withhold the address lest you go eat it all and leave me none!

By this stage we’re stuffed, and I’m nursing my second coffee, when we’re offered a taste of  the brand spankin’ new gin + tonic marmalade! GIN and TONIC MARMALADE!! I love these clever clogs! In addition, the lovely peeps give us this insanely fresh ricotta and lemon muffin. Now we’re really full. Thank goodness I have a bit of a stroll home, as I was full to bursting.

Just one more thing; the coffee: it’s honestly really good. I drink long blacks. I can taste, burnt bitter coffee easily as it’s not hidden by milk. This is the first coffee I’ve ever had that didn’t require me to add sugar. It’s by roasters called The Golden Cobra (Never heard of them before). If you see their blend, try it.

Hi Reem – Golden Cobra is both my partner’s and my favourite roaster. In addition to Ben’s two tips, you can also get it at The Kick Inside, a new cafe recently opened in Erskineville. Great to know there’s another local we can check out with great food and coffee…

The flavour combinations they have for jams are just genius. I’m going to have my go on the rhubarb and mullet wine as soon as I get a chance!
